The carpet surface we use is the highest quality Prima GT Felt carpet (light grey in colour), designed and produced for RC racing only. We took delivery of this at our first national, which makes the carpet just under 3 years old! We run every other weekend on this at our club days, and only allow current BRCA legal additive (no oil based additives of old), this means the carpet offers more consistent grip, and has not degraded at all structurally in its short lifetime, not to mention tyres will last longer, and can be used again and again without major rubber decomposition.
The size of our track is a little under 420sqm, that’s 7 carpets, 30m in length. This makes our venue one of the biggest temporary indoor circuits in the UK.
Our track markers are of the generally approved type, used in many other indoor RC venues throughout the UK, square in cross-section and white in colour, the markers from personal experience are very easy to depict from the carpet for close racing and car placement. Following the track markers are the apices markers, these are a very forgiving 4mm thick flexible PVC construction, wrapped around a foam impact block, which is secured to the carpet with Velcro. Around the apex assembly is a hi-viz yellow ‘rumble strip’, which is typically secured with red and white barrier tape. This whole apex construction is light, forgiving to cars, and most importantly easy to aim for on approach.
One other area of interest I would like to add would be the quality of our driver rostrum. Once again we have arguably the best driver rostrum available from any club in the UK, thick wood plates are secured in a 4mm alloy frame, which stand on ultra-durable high quality tubular framework 1300mm from the ground, this framework has diagonal support beams for added strength. We have a total of 4 platforms, which seat a total of 12 drivers. Access to the rostrum is met by a short flight of stairs, which are constructed of the same quality wood and metal as the platforms, these stairs clamp into place on the first platform, and make access to the rostrum quick, easy and most of all safe! This type of construction of high quality and regulation approved staging can only be found in theatres around the world for use of plays and dance practices.
